I’m Debbie Peoples, health coach and plant-based cook and I know firsthand that you are what you eat.
My story
I grew up on a standard American diet, and as an adult prepared, what I believed, to be healthy and balanced meals for my own family. But at age 39, struggling with depression, mood swings and a complete absence of energy, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, Hashimoto’s disease.
My body was attacking my thyroid and the hormones it produced.
Although my naturopath wasn’t sure why I’d developed the disease, we suspected it originated from leaky gut syndrome, which is caused by diet.
After much research, I decided to switch my entire family to a gluten-free plant-based diet. At first my two athletic sons were not amused and my late husband needed some convincing.
This also led me on a journey to complete a health coaching certificate from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, plant-based cooking certification from Rouxbe Cooking School and plant-based nutrition certification from eCornell.
Three months into our food changes, our lives began to transform.
One of my sons struggled with acne and the other, with a persistent fungal sinus infection. Both of those problems cleared up completely.
Within three years, my Hashimoto’s disease all but disappeared. While I still have Hashimotos, I learned to manage my symptoms by eating whole foods and sticking to a plant rich diet. I lost the weight I’d gained while I was sick, and grew back the hair I lost (yes it got bad). Now I’m more energetic and healthier than ever.
This brings us to OOOHMAMA!
Preparing and serving food is a rewarding way to bring pleasure to others. It also provides me with satisfaction and happiness, something I’ve known since I started cooking at the age of 11.
When we removed dairy from our diets, this left many recipes tasting bland. This is when I started experimenting with creating my own variations of the cheez – free of artificial chemicals, made with local whole food ingredients, gluten-free, vegan and packed full of flavour.
It was soooo good that we couldn’t keep all this goodness to ourselves and OOOHMAMA! cheez was born.
I dedicate this work to my beloved late husband, Gary, who was always my biggest supporter to go after my passions. He is the driving force behind OOOHMAMA! and the reason we are able to bless so many people each day with this product.
